19.2.1 Overview of the historical development: Austria

In the graph below you can compare all tax rates that have existed in Austria. You can mark the corresponding years by placing a check mark.

If you compare the development in the course of the decades, three aspects stand out:

1) The maximum tax rate never falls below 50%.

2) In the 1970s and 1980s, the tax burden was significantly higher, especially on middle and upper incomes.

3) The basic tax-free allowance grows rarely but by leaps and bounds.

In summary, it can be seen clearly that both the lower income segments (3) and the upper ones (1) are relieved, while the middle incomes are drawn on more (2).
